I capture the mood, the feel and expressions of the scene at the moment. The moment of pressing the shutter is depended on the play of light, the atmosphere and at times anticipating the moment.

For me, photography is about sharing. I want to share with you the places that I have been, the moods and experiences. My greatest achievement is that you experience the images as much as I do.

Join me on a trip to the places I have been to. Enjoy the ride.

interview

What is your favourite film of all time?!
Shadowlands

What music are you currently listening to and why?
The Blues Broers as I love the blues. From the blues rock originated. In fact the lines between blues and rock sometimes get blurred. I am also into Pink Floyd. They created their music.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?
Obie Oberholzer. He is way out and wacky. I did not understand his art until I attend one of his talks. When I understood the lengths he went to, to create his art, I understood his art.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Ansel Adams created simple, yet striking photographs. He went to great lengths to take his photographs. He then spent many hours in the darkroom to attain the tonal range and the detail. I aspire to create photographs like him.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
Obie Oberholzer’s “Diesel & Dust Part II” at the PHOTOGRAPHERSgalleryZA. His style had changed and I realized that I could produce similar work, but in my own style.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
Do you manipulate your photographs? My answer is yes. Making photographs is a multistep approach. First you have see a potential photograph. Then you have to make it, by selecting the composition and exposure settings. Then the photograph has to be developed in the darkroom or on the computer. This is how a photographer’s style comes into play. Put two photographers together at the same place and time, and you will get two different prints.

What/ who inspired you to be an artist?
This was a self development. Initially I never saw myself as an artist. As my photography developed I realized that I could be an artist.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any, the significance this location has.
The great thing about been a nature photographer, is that you can create art where ever you are. Presently, most of my work is done in the beautiful Tulbagh Valley. Tulbagh is a special place. Not just the landscapes, but also people that makes the valley.

What do you like most about being an artist?
Sharing! Sharing the places that I have been to, and the scenes that I have been able to capture.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
Another photographer said one of my photographs reminded him of Ansel Adams’ work.

What are your plans for the coming year?
To have an exhibition or two.
