I paint mostly underwater scenes because I dive a lot and enjoy being in the water. Painting this subject reflects who I am and how I feel when I’m in the water, free. My goal is to not limit myself with this subject but to learn how to excel in others also. I make decisions during the course of my work by choosing a focal point; finding balance; establishing a rhythm of tranquility and choosing warm and cool colours to represent energy, peace, joy and so forth. My favourite tool is using my fingers to paint. It creates a pattern of gentleness and harmony. A painting has turned out really well when I feel 100% comfortable and satisfied with the results. It must evoke a sense of excitement and purity. With diligence, knowledge and skills, I will continue to use the talent that God has given me.

interview

What is your favourite film of all time?!
The Book of Eli, because it conveys a positive message.

What music are you currently listening to and why?
Alternative music.. I listen to it because I feel connected to it.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?
Conor McCreedy – I admire him because he inspires me with his free and spontaneous method of painting. He paints with feeling and applies his skills as an artist brilliantly.  Brindley Pritchard – I admire him because he paints realistically and has an eye for detail. He paints what his mind sees and conveys the message to viewers effectively. Bettie Nieuwoudt – I admire her because she paints enchanting yet realistic seascapes. She paints with integrity and great skill.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Rembrandt, because he had an extraordinary gift for portraiture and his source of inspiration came from his beloved family.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
All of them have made an impact on me. I have learnt from other artists by observing their artwork. They inspire me to take my artwork to the next level.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
They always ask me how I paint and how long it took to do it. I tell them that I prefer to paint with my fingers and that I do not record how long it takes to finish a painting. It is finished when I am 100% satisfied.

What/ who inspired you to be an artist?
God has inspired me to be an artist because He is the Creator of all things. He is the master artist and I can learn from Him.  I believe He gave me the gift of creativity and I want to use it to the best of my ability.

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any, the significance this location has:
I create my art in my studio at home.  I have all the resources I need there.

What do you like most about being an artist?
I have the freedom to express myself and to grow as an artist without any limitations.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
Selling my paintings and making the buyer a very happy and satisfied customer.

What are your plans for the coming year?
I will be exhibiting my artwork on May 13, 2011. I would like to find a gallery in my residing area to exhibit my artwork and branch out from there. Next year, I plan to submit a portrait for the BP Portrait Awards. I plan to do whatever is beneficial for my career as an artist.
