Rituals are found throughout all races and religions, through all people and they all mean something different to the people partaking in them.

The works I create are part of a personal ritual, both in media, process as well as subject matter. The process is a big part of my work and performs closure, protection, understanding as well as forming a visual aspect for the viewer. Although the works are incredibly personal, the viewer is drawn to the works through the different depths, textures, and abstract attributes which make up the whole.

The method I use results in a soft burn which is both functional and ethereal. Laser cutting is quite a "harsh" process, but the after effects are soft and serene, gentle burn marks on the board creates a completely unique element which is different for every piece. This process mirrors the results of how one deals with specific situations, the aftermath, the scars and memories of these events, and how one chooses to deal with them.

My process is my ritual, and is paramount in every work that I create. It is a personal journey that I take every time I create a work and although the viewer has not seen this process, the knowledge of its existence is there and it draws a deeper meaning to the works seemingly strange subject matter. The combination of subtle colour, gentle burns, the subject matter itself, shapes and words all work together to create an interesting surface that is intended to draw the viewer in and to allow them to make their own ritual by looking at each work and creating their own understanding from it.

interview

What is your favourite film of all time?!
Modigliani

What music are you currently listening to and why?
Black eyed peas new album. Quite catchy and energetic.

Which living artists do you most admire and why?
Vanessa Berlien, Virginia Mackenny and Francois Irvine. Their individuality through their art.Which makes it interesting and evokes some feeling of calmness. I like that.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Leonardo da Vinci, he was just legendary for his time and his works have had such a major impact on many people, centuries later.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
What does it mean! and my answer - What do you think it means?

What/ who inspired you to be an artist?
My art teacher, Alana Leigh from Epworth high. She was just so influential, so positive and creative and inspiring!

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any, the significance of this location is.
I make most of the designs on my Mac at home and then do the processing in my studio above my garage, or in the garage, depending on how big the work is. I can’t afford a big studio, but am looking for somthing in my price range that will be suitable.

What do you like most about being an artist?
The creativity, that can escape when bottled up for too long. Its a means of expression for oneself mainly, and then to show that to the world is a great feeling, but personally it is for me to have a means to get what I can’t express verbally, out.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
Having had a solo show, and being part of group shows last year (2010) was superb, such a great feeling of accomplishment.

What are your plans for the coming year?
I would like to have a another solo show, but I am currently processing things for new works. Any show to be a part of would be great.
