My artworks are a reflection of the various things that surround me. They symbolize the contemporary human existence in our present day societies. I portray the social and political spaces in my artwork and create visual images that make the viewer think otherwise.
I work in semi-realistic paintings and monoprints depicting my thoughts and ideas in a symbolic way using a diverse range of mixed media on canvas, paper and board.
Contemporary art must not merely been interpreted in terms of it s pictorial aesthetic qualities, but as a discipline that natures insight into the future, thereby allowing the continual quest for social and political stability.

interview

What is your favourite film of all time?!
A Bugs Life

What music are you currently listening to and why?
Jazz and Reggae music. I love the purity of the instruments in jazz and the strong humanity message in reggae

Which living artists do you most admire and why?
Hellen Leiros, a Zimbabwean visual artist. Her work is full of power, meaning and is inspirational.

Which deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Luis Meque. His paintings were realistic documentation of his life and the life of others. I  admire his brush work, pure bright colours and simplicity.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
Roots Exhibition at Gallery Delta. The work was a true depiction of the African past as interpreted by contemporary artist. There were also century old artefacts, whose old and dry appearance was visually appealing to me.

What is the question you get asked most frequently about your work and how do you answer it?
Qn: Why do you use tiles/square shapes in your work?
An: The shapes/tiles create space and perspective in my work. I am also able to place objects in the composition more easily

What/ who inspired you to be an artist?
The human body/anatomy is my greatest inspiration. I find there is purity in a naked body. The face can show a lot, the pose can have a meaning, the size can emphasize power or strength and the colour of the skin can be anything from yellow to blue

Can you tell us about where you make your art and what if any, the significance of this location is
I have a studio space at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town where l usually work from. Being an important historic building, I strive to make my work equally important.

What do you like most about being an artist?
The ability to create. To come up with something spectacular from nothing. The ability to give value and importance to something that was valueless before.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
To have won a merit award as the best visual artist from the German Embassy

What are your plans for the coming year?
To create a body of work under the theme ‘prophecy’. In the second half of the year (2011) I intend to have a solo exhibition titled ‘Works of Prophecy’
