Which new trends or South African artists do you find inspiring at the moment?
I find Marlene Dumas very inspiring for the expressive way she uses paint and for her bold use of colour.
Which South African deceased artist do you most admire and why?
I very much admire Irma Stern. She completely immersed herself in art, producing a prolific quantity of paintings, sculptures and developing a large collection of African art. One can visit her old house and see how every inch of wall space is covered in paintings, mainly inspired by her travels through Africa.
Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
I once went to a retrospective exhibition of Richard Avedon’s work that really struck me. All the prints were floor to ceiling height and all in black and white, rendering them all the more powerful. Photographs like ‘Dovima with Elephants’ were inspiring for their sense of daring, but also playfulness.
Where do you get your inspiration for your work?
What I see. What I think.
Do you have any rituals or habits involving your art-making that you can tell us about?
My paintings always originate in photographs that I have taken. I photograph with a digital SLR which I find a great way to experiment with imagery.
What do you like most about being an artist?
I enjoy the process of putting things together and constructing something imagined, whether this be paint strokes or series of photographs.
How do you handle bad days when you experience artist's block?
I doodle.
Do you feel that you want to make a difference to the world or in people's lives? If yes, how?
Yes, I would like to encourage people to think that art is a language which they can use to express their thoughts.
What are your plans for the coming year?
My plans are to create art for a joint exhibition I am having in February and from then on to continue to make art in response to new ideas I have and from what I encounter in art produced by other young South African artists.
